End of Term 2 Week 6 Pānui

Tēnā rā koutou,

Thank you for your support with letting us have our Teacher Only Day on Tuesday. Not only was it a great day of mātauranga (learning) about local history in our rohe (region) but it was also great to come together as a collective group of primary schools. In Te Ao Māori,(The Māori World), knowledge is seen as a taonga (treasure), so we were extremely grateful with all that was shared with us from the Tai Huki team.

You may have noticed that James finished fixing our front fence last week and it looks great! Our replacement sign is being printed as we speak and we hope to get that installed next week. Our pātaka kai (pantry) finally has a sign explaining what it is all about, pictured below. Thanks Adam (Dad to Mila R in Rātā) from AGR Industries who designed and printed this for us. If you have any excess produce at your place that needs a home, feel free to use this and share the love.

Our playground bark situation was getting a bit dire so we had Vaughan from Mega Mulch drop us off 12 cubes. Our kids have had a great time working together to smooth this all out for us as you can tell from the pics below – What a team! Great demonstration of our uara (values) of whanaungatanga (working together) and kaitiakitanga (looking after our environment).

Some of you may know that my son Dallas attends Russell Street School, where I used to work before coming here. The principal there, Nick (whose kids came to Turitea – ) organised an information evening that was run by Rob Cope from Our Kids Online. I went with my parent hat on and found the evening pretty ‘hard hitting’ with navigating safe internet access for our tamariki. I am wanting to gauge whether there is interest in us organising for Rob or someone similar to run a parent evening for us all. If this is something you might be interested in attending, please indicate whether this is an investment you want us to pursue.

Hui ā Kura (Assembly):

This afternoon we had our third Hui ā Kura (assembly) of Term 2 and Henry and Wid were our Year 6 hosts. I love that we can count on our tuakana (seniors) to step up and show leadership, they always make us so proud. We handed out the School Cross-Country certificates from last week and as always, we recognised those who consistently demonstrate our uara (values) and getting their tiwhikete (certificate) are:

Rimu: Caleb – Manaakitanga and James – Mātauranga
Rātā: Mila S – Mātauranga
Pōhutukawa: Esmay – Whanaungatanga
Mataī: Andre – Mātauranga
Tōtara: Hugo – Whanaungatanga
Kahikatea: Ryleigh – Whanaungatanga
Tumuaki: Elias – Whanaungatanga

Interschool Cross Country:

On Wednesday, Anneliese took our team of 18 runners off to the interschool event at the Ashhurst Domain. Over 100 runners took part in each race, which is massive! Our runners all did so well and Turitea School placed 12th overall out of the 21 schools that took part. Kei reira (shot) to Elias who placed 7th in the Year 6’s. Thanks to Becs from Ashhurst and Craig from Cornerstone who organised and ran the event.

Cluster Cross Country:

We are looking forward to this event next Thursday at Stewart’s Farm on Albert Rd in Tokomaru. The top 5 runners from all age groups are eligible to compete. Please check to see if you received a notification about this on Hero earlier in the week as we don’t have that many responses. It will be a great day!

Boys Netball:

Next Tuesday our Year 4-6 Boys are off with Cameron to the Boys Netball festival at Vautier Park. Michaela from Netball Manawatū has been working with our boys for the last few weeks every Tuesday getting them ready to come and take part in this inaugural event.
