Kia ora e te whānau,
Hoping you all managed to not be affected by Cyclone Gabrielle this week. Our river was certainly pretty full! Unfortunately the same can’t be said for some of those in the Hawke’s Bay, East Coast, Auckland and Northland regions who have been hit badly. Some truly devastating scenes from there. I know in our senior classes, some authentic learning occurred around cyclones and earthquakes in light of these recent events. I am hoping that some social action will come from our tamariki in what we might be able to do to help.
School Snaps:
Here are a few of my favourite pictures I’ve taken from around the kura over the week showcasing creativity, innovation, problem solving and most importantly links to our four school uara/values (whanaungatanga – teamwork, manaakitanga – kindness, kaitiakitanga – looking after things and mātauranga – learning)
Turitea Uniforms:
This year, we want to trial something new with regards to the Turitea Sports Uniforms. Julie has labeled every single uniform with a unique number. Your child/ren will be issued with a kit for them, for the academic year, even if they do not play a sport this term. There will be events over the year that your child will be required to wear these, hence why everyone will be issued with one. We will ask you to treat the uniform with respect, care for it and only wear it to and from these events (not around the house!) to keep these looking sharp, as sadly we have had some uniforms returned in an ‘unwearable’ state. We appreciate your support.
From the PTA:
Hopefully you’ve received notification by now that we don’t feel it is right to run the Overnight Camp, which would have been tonight. Our field is still quite damp too, but the moral compass came into play on postponing this event. The PTA have decided that it will be on next Friday 24th February. The event will be on regardless, however if the weather is still not nice, it will just be a whānau BBQ and movie night in the hall. The form is open until next Monday evening if you still want to join or maybe the date change has worked in your favour. A reminder to notify them if you can no longer attend too.
Monster Garage Sale:
Raffle books are coming home today, so please look in your child’s bag. There is one booklet per child, but they will all go home with the eldest child. Our MGS is on Saturday 18th March. Don’t forget to save your items (not clothes) for the white elephant stall. Feel free to ask friends and family if they have anything to donate. Look out for the MGS helper board to please put your name down to help out with something on or before the day, we’d appreciate any time you can give on the day!
Weetbix Tryathlon:
This is on Tuesday 21st March at Ongley Park. A great event that encourages physical activity and resilience in our tamariki. Unfortunately, due to Covid, the event was canceled last year, so I am hoping we will have plenty of keen participants this year. I have five free entries to give away to those who have never done the event before. I will communicate the ‘how to win’ these next week with our kids, but it will involve doing an act of service for us for the school. In the meantime, you can register for the event and link in to our school group here.
Sport @ Turitea:
Hockey is our only code running this term and it starts next Wednesday 22nd or Thursday 23rd February. (Year 5/6 play on Wednesdays and Year 0-4 play on Thursdays) Dani will have sent out the team lists etc. Julie is in the process of sorting the uniforms, as mentioned above and these will be ready next week.
Kia pai tō mutunga wiki! (have a great weekend)
Ngā Manaakitanga,
Troy
