Kia ora e te whānau,
I don’t know about you, but isn’t it funny how when you have a short week, you make up for it by squeezing a full week of mahi into it? Thanks again for your support in allowing us to visit some amazing schools on Tuesday. The teachers came back buzzing with the things they saw and some changes as you may have heard, where implemented the very next day! It was a great opportunity for us to see these all together and debrief about it as a staff as to what improvements or adjustments we want to make to our kura.
Marae Visit Next Week:
I know the weather report is a little bit iffy for next week, so please ensure tamariki bring a good jacket, but we do have wet weather plans. Buses aim to leave before 9am on both days, so if you could get your tamariki to school by 8.30am we would appreciate it. If you have any old newspaper lying around your house, we just need to contribute some towards the stock at the Marae. We also asked those who are staying the night to bring a canned food item on Monday morning to donate to the food bank at the Marae. We will have boxes available for dropping these off in the morning. A reminder that all Matai & Totara Year 4’s need to be picked up from the Marae in the evening as they will not come back to school on Monday.
Mihi Whakatau:
This informal welcome is an important part of the process of coming onto a Marae on Monday evening. Like any ceremony, there are certain tikanga (guidelines) that we must follow to show respect. I understand for some, this may be your first time on a Marae so I want to give you clarity to avoid any discomfort. If you have been on a Marae before, this is a reminder, but each Marae have their own kawa (protocols) they adhere to:
Dress Code: Usual practice is Men wear long pants, Women wear a skirt/dress, Children wear tidy attire.
Arrival: Park on Maxwell’s Line and enter through the main driveway and wait at the big rock by 5.30pm.
Proceedings: Gather in a group in the order; Girls, Women, Boys, Men. There will be a caller from the Tangata Whenua (hosts) but we will not return the call, we will just walk towards the wharenui (meeting house). We take our shoes off on the mahau (front porch) and proceed inside. Male sit in the front rows with females sitting in the rear on the paepae (seats). We stay standing until our hosts tell us to sit. They will then speak, sing and invite us for the harirū (handshake). This has been modified to suit the current landscape.
Cluster Cross Country:
Thanks so much to all the parents who transported and supported our runners. It was a super challenging course and the children did so well. The rain created some havoc with the recording system so we are still awaiting the official results to come in. We also had a team of outstanding Year 5/6’s represent us at the Manawatū Interschool Cross Country on Tuesday. Special mention to Dana who placed 16th overall.
Pie Fundraiser:
Here is the form to order pies for your whānau. Fill the freezer or Nana and Grandads freezers! All proceeds support the school. We have paper copies on request at the office or email Julie for a sheet.
Pool Party:
This is tomorrow at the Freyberg Pools from 6-8pm. There is no cost to attend, but every child attending must be a student or sibling of a Turitea School student. Every child must have an adult supervisor for the duration of the event. A sausage sizzle, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase (cash only). It will be a fun event and we encourage adults to join in the fun too.
Jump Jam Competitive Squad:
After many lunchtime trials and workouts, Kate has selected the Year 5/6 Jump Jam Squad for 2022. Congratulations to Katelyn, Kiara LG, Cory, Dana, Samantha, Kiara M, Izzy, Leah, Grace, Ruby, Ava, Rania, Maggie, Abigail, Myah and Khobe. We look forward to seeing your routine come together by August.
Torah’s Last Day:
Unfortunately today we farewell Torah who has been our Massey Teacher in Pohutukawa for the last 8 weeks. I know the students (and Kate) will miss her and thank her for the contributions she has made. What an outstanding teacher she will be next year. We wish her all the best for her next placement.
Epic Music Lessons:
These lessons started today with Oscar Severinsen as the tutor, who used to attend Turitea School. Way cool right? It was so awesome to see so many students sign up for these lessons with him.
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra:
Are offering a free concert to encourage young kids to love music. It is on Saturday 18th June at 2:30pm at the Regent on Broadway. The sign up is on the website and can be found here.
