Kia ora e te whānau, (Hello everyone)
Ngā mihi (thanks) for your support last Friday in allowing us to have the day as a staff to focus on the implementation of Te Mātaiaho (our refreshed curriculum). As always, when our staff get together, we have many robust conversations about our path forward, as we are all very passionate about education and want to ‘keep ahead of the curve’ with these changes.
It was mīharo (outstanding) to see our kids shine on stage at Pae Tamariki on Wednesday. Their performance really was incredible, showcasing their hard work and dedication to kapa haka. What was even more impressive, was the rousing haka tautoko (song of support) that we were given afterwards by our former ākonga (students) who attend Te Kura Waenga o Monrad Tirohanga (Monrad Intermediate). That showed how much we impressed them and made our kids feel pretty special! A huge mihi (thank you) to all the parents/whānau who came to watch or followed along on the live stream. Your support for this kaupapa (topic) is valued and we appreciate you all. If you missed it, here is a link to watch along. Mihi atu ki a koe (Thanks to) Whaea Tūrehu for your mahi (work) in getting them prepared for this event. Thanks Meryl for whipping us up another one of her short creative videos showing a bit of BTS (behind the scenes) action for you all.

Cary and Liam from QHL finished installing our new carpet in Tōtara and Pōhutukawa on Wednesday and it looks flash as, as you can see above! I know our ākonga (learners) will love the feeling of that on their feet. The team from Isles Construction will start on our roofing project next week which should be done by the end of the upcoming holidays. There will be scaffolding going up from next Friday and they will try and minimise disruptions to us all, but there will be some loud noises and blocked off areas. Speaking of disruptions, you may have read the traffic warning signage that the works on Old West Road are continuing through until July 26th, which puts further pressure on our already overloaded traffic situation. Please allow time for this when picking up and dropping off your tamariki.

Cameron took our Year 2/3 Boys to their Netball Tournament on Tuesday and they had a blast with students from Tokomaru and Hiwinui schools, as you can see above. A great opportunity for our kids to get exposure to a sport that traditionally isn’t played by many boys.
Hui Ā Kura:
Our third Hui Ā Kura (Assembly) of the term was held in Tāne Mahuta this afternoon led by Jack, Xavier and Ivor from Tōtara. As usual, we recognised those who model our school’s uara consistently, through our fortnightly tiwhikete (certificates) that we give out. Those people were:
- Rimu: Theo – Kaitiakitanga
- Rātā: Quinn – Whanaungatanga
- Pōhutukawa: Francesca – Manaakitanga
- Mataī: Isla – Manaakitanga
- Tōtara: Jackson – Mātauranga
- Kauri: Finn – Mātauranga
Cluster and Interschool Cross Country:
To those who made Top 5 in our school event last week, we have two events for some of them to take part in. The Year 5/6 Interschool Event is on at the Ashhurst Domain next Wednesday 11th June from 12.15pm. Then all ages are able to compete in the Cluster Cross Country at Stewarts Farm on Williams Rd in Tokomaru next Friday 13th June. You will have received comms from Julie if your child is eligible, but please let us know if your child does not want to take part in these events.
Matariki Event:
Hope to see you all at our Matariki event next Friday 13th June from 4.30pm – 7pm. Please can you have your children at school by 4.30pm, so we can get them ready for their performance at 5pm, that will be in Tāne Mahuta (Hall). Our tamariki will be showing off their mahi toi (artwork) and performing their kapa haka bracket (including the poi item that was accidentally omitted from Pae Tamariki) for you to enjoy. We will also have classrooms set up to enjoy a range of kemu (games) together. Get your kai from The Real Deal Frybread and Hāngi food truck which is catering for us. Please place your orders and make payment to the PTA account by next Tuesday 10th June. Click here to see the menu and order. If we don’t get enough orders, then they won’t be able to come, which will take away from the cultural vibe we are trying to create.
From the PTA:
Y’all can get ready to wrangle up your posse for our Wild West Quiz Night on Saturday 9th August. We’re having it right here in little ole Tāne Mahuta from 7pm for a ‘rootin’ tootin’ good time. Dust off your cowboy boots, sharpen your wits and prepare for an epic showdown. To help us rustle up enough grub and provisions, we’d appreciate it if y’all could register your team by 18th July here. Don’t fret if your wagon isn’t full; if you’re looking to join a team, just send us an email and we’ll see if we can help you find some scalliwags to join.
IBC Tank:
We are looking to purchase a second hand IBC tank like this one if anyone has one they aren’t using or knows of someone with one going spare. Please let us know before we explore the open market for one.
From the Community:
- Manawatū Youth Theatre presents Elf Jr. the Musical at the Globe Theatre from July 2nd–11th. Join Buddy the Elf on his hilarious adventure, filled with catchy songs and plenty of festive cheer – a perfect outing for all ages! Tickets are $17.
Ngā manaakitanga, (With kind regards)
