End of Term 2 Week 5 Pānui

Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou (Warmest of greetings to you all),

Getting this out to you a day earlier than usual since we are closed for instruction tomorrow because of our Staff Only Day. As mentioned, our day is centred around the continued implementation of Te Mātaiaho (our refreshed Curriculum) and PB4L, our school wide focus around improving consistency in our expectations across the school. We would normally have Hui Ā Kura tomorrow, so we will have it next Friday 6th June instead, at the usual time of 2.15pm.

Hopefully you noticed that our final uara (values) sign was installed last weekend which overlooks the front carpark. I had someone ask me if it got stolen, Alas no! There was just an issue with the printing, which finally has been resolved. Massive thanks to Ollie for completing this job, I know it has been a bit of a bother, but we got there in the end. Next part is to get the metal signs made with the names of each uara mounted on the tōtara poles.

It is always a sad time for us as a school when a whānau leaves Turitea, as we are one big family here. Unfortunately today marks Alice’s last day with us, as her whānau are moving to Woodville. I know Karen and the kids from Kauri will really feel this loss. All the best with your transition to your new kura Alice, I will miss your hugs at the end of every day.

On Monday, our tuakana (seniors) had their fourth session of Garden to Table and homemade pizza was on the menu and it was very delicious, there were not a lot of empty plates afterwards! Meryl whipped up another of her little videos showcasing what they got up to, which you can view here

Thanks to those whānau who came to the Structured Literacy afternoon that Anna and Carly ran on Tuesday afternoon as you can see above. We had lots of great feedback from those who attended, so I am glad you found it useful and informative. Mihi atu e te whānau (Thanks to the team) for providing this opportunity.

Next week we have Bella, who is a student teacher from Massey University joining us for the rest of the term learning alongside Whaea Anneliese and the ākonga (learners) in Tōtara. Bella is the whanaunga (relation) of Ruby, as well as Marnie and Heidi, so it will be nice having that further connect. She also comes highly recommended by her Massey lecturers so we’re lucky to have her.

We have the team from QHL installing brand new carpet in Tōtara and Pōhutukawa starting on Tuesday next week. Whaea Anneliese will be teaching in Tāne Mahuta and Cameron will be teaching in Kahikatea for the week that this job should take to be completed. I know the learners in those two spaces will be pretty happy to get back in there in W7 and soak up that ‘new carpet’ smell and feel.

Cross Country:

Huge mihi (thanks) to Julie, Fraser and Tim for all their mahi (work) in making today’s event a success. We were worried that the rain might put things off for us, but luckily the weather played nice and waited until we had finished running, as we had a cracker of a day! We appreciated all the parent/whānau support that we had for your tamariki, it was a great turn out! Big thanks to the parents who helped us pack down at the end of the race and shout out to Janelle for shouting the team coffees – what a community! Here are the results of the day, all the students who placed 1st – 5th are eligible to go to our Cluster Cross Country on Friday 13th June (W7). Our Year 5/6 runners are also able to take part in the Palmerston North Interschool Event, event two days prior, at the Ashhurst Domain on Wednesday 11th June (W7). Keep an eye on Hero for the details on these.

Pae Tamariki:

Hopefully next week Wednesday 4th June is already on your calendar to see your tamariki on stage at the Regent on Broadway at 11.40am. Please note, the learners in Rimu will not be performing on stage this time. Please bring a gold coin entry if you can come and watch our kids shine!

Matariki Event:

If you can’t make the performance above, please come to our Matariki event on Friday 13th June from 4.30pm – 7pm, as we’d love to celebrate this important event with you. Our tamariki will be showing off their mahi toi (artwork), sharing some kemu (games) and performing their Kapa Haka Bracket for you to enjoy.

Reporting to Parents:

As I mentioned in a few recent pānui, we’ve been busy aligning our reporting to you all with Te Mātaiaho (our refreshed curriculum). I have updated the information on Hero to reflect this, but you can read it here. These will go live in Hero (or in your child’s bag to our Rimu whānau) in the last week of term. If you have any questions or feedback, you know how to find me.

Year 2/3 Boys Netball Tournament:

Cameron is taking the team to this event next Tuesday after the Long Weekend, so please ensure they come with all the necessities for the day, as per the comms from Julie. Big mihi to Michaela and the team from Netball Manawatū for organising this day and preparing our boys for the last five weeks.

Mulch Moving:

If any members of our hāpori (community) would like to come and lend a hand at any stage with helping us move the many cubes of this, please BYO Wheelbarrow and spade/rake, it would be really appreciated. Chat to Troy or Meryl if you can help us. Ngā mihi!

Table Tennis Success:

It’s been fantastic to see a resurgence of interest in Table Tennis. We have four teams out of the 24 in the primary schools competition this year. This weekend, two of our own, Henry (a proud Turitea alumnus, who we can still claim) and Xavier are representing Manawatū in the U13 boys at the North Island Teams Championships. Henry has also been selected for the U15 team. It’s a real testament to the momentum building around the sport at our school. Many thanks to all the parents who have supported this sport!

From the PTA:

As part of the Matariki celebration on Friday 13th June at school, we’ll be taking pre-orders from The Real Deal Frybread and Hangi food truck. Please place your orders and make payment to the PTA account by Tuesday 10th June. Click here to see the menu and order.
