End of Term 1 Week 9 Pānui

Ngā mihi maioha ki a koutou (Warmest of greetings to you all)

It seems like all of a sudden nature has woken up and decided it’s Autumn! We’ve started getting those dark chilly mornings, and with Daylight Savings (who came up with that idea??) ending next Sunday we’ll start getting those dark chilly evenings too. But there’s no doom and gloom at Turitea School – we’ve had too much going on! Troy and Anneliese have flown the coop and spent the latter half of this week attending a conference in Te Tai Tokerau, Northland. We can’t wait to hear how it went, and we are assured that the balmy northern climate has only served to aid their learning, not their tans.

While the cat has been away the senior school has been out cycling, the junior school held their athletics tournament, the year sixes have been creating our next mural, the Jets coached us in basketball skills, the garden club has begun to harvest their crops, and all this on top of all the learning going on in class! Whew. No wonder there are some tired faces heading home for the weekend!

Turitea has also welcomed Rebecca to Rimu – nau mai haere mai Rebecca, it’s been great to see you already feeling at home in our kura!

Hui Ā Kura (Assembly):

Our third Hui Ā Kura of the year was held today, led by Topher and Leo from Tōtara. Both boys shared their pepeha and led our kura in a rousing chorus of Whakataka Te Hau, the waiata that we have been learning over the past little while. On top of being a beautiful song, it speaks on the changing of the seasons, and welcomes the incoming winter. A very pertinent sentiment as we barrel towards Term 2! We also shared those who have modelled the use of our school’s uara consistently, through our fortnightly tiwhikete that we give out. Those people were:

  • Rimu: Evie – Mātauranga
  • Rātā: Caleb – Whanaungatanga
  • Pōhutukawa: Ethan – Mātauranga
  • Mataī: Owen – Mātauranga
  • Tōtara: Topher – Mātauranga
  • Kauri: Joe – Whanaungatanga
  • Tumuaki: Ella G- Whanaungatanga

Morning Drop Off:

Another reminder to please not drop off children before 8am. We cannot guarantee that staff will be at school before this time. You may drop your child off at school after 8, where we ask them to sit and wait quietly in the quad until 8:30. Only then are they allowed to play in the playground and enter their classrooms. Please only drop students off before 8:30 if you have to.

School Gate:

We are very lucky to have our school fully fenced ensuring safety for all our tamariki. During the hours of 8am-3pm, our gate must stay closed. We open it after then, but close the gate overnight so those who come to school before 8:30 will find it shut in the morning. Please assist your tamariki in opening the gate for them, and please don’t hook it back so that it stays open. Thank you.

Year 5/6 Bike Safety Week:

What a great success the bike safety week has been!  Big thank you to Erin and the team at Sport Manawatū for their continued support in developing this lifelong skill in our tamariki. An especially big shout out to Faye who spent many more than her fair share of hours in the bike seat this week!

Year 6 Mural Project:

Carolyn has been hard at work with our talented year 6 students to create the next mural for our school. Kahikatea has been transformed into an art studio, and it is exciting getting tiny glimpses of what the final creation will turn out to be! We are waiting with baited breath!

Giant Paukena (Pumpkin) Competition:
