End of Term 3 Week 4 Pānui

Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou, (Warmest of greetings to you all)

Production ticket orders went live today (see the previous Hero post or click here to order) and we can’t wait for this one to take shape. The theme this year is a good old-fashioned ‘Tiki-Tour’ around our country, learning a bit about each place we travel to, with each class having a different town/city to tell the story of Ayla and Mackenzie have submitted their entry for the Design The Programme Cover competition, which you can see below. It is on Friday 12th September at the Speirs Centre at PNBHS where there will be two shows: 4.30pm – 5.30pm and 6pm – 7pm. Adult tickets are $12 and Child (2-14 years) are $8. The venue has 360 seats for each show, so don’t miss out.

On Tuesday, the ākonga (learners) from Mataī and Pōhutukawa attended the annual Kind Hearts conference and were entertained by Karen O’Leary (who you may know from Wellington Paranormal) and local heroes Kath Bee, Trace Moroney and Rayz Roadshow. More than 250 kids sang, listened, danced, jumped and laughed their way through the morning, pushing the ‘Positive Vibes Only’ message.
On Wednesday, Amelia C, Chris, Hugo, Riley, Ben and Topher were chosen to attend the senior version of this event which had over 350 students in attendance and also were entertained and inspired by the guest speakers.

Today we sent two teams to the annual Mathex competition held at the Awapuni Racecourse. We sent a Year 5 team of Kyerin, Leo, Mackenzie and Mikhail and a Year 6 team of Chris, Elisa, Ivor and Toby. Our Year 5 team won a silver medal (middle third of all teams) in the challenge and our Year 6 team won a gold medal (top third), which was an awesome result! As you can see above, also today we had six teams of Year 5/6 students take part in the Manawatū Orienteering Teams Champs held at Panieri Park this morning. Although our teams didn’t quite make the podium, it was great to see so many first-timers giving it a go in the rain and cold. Mataī and Pōhutukawa missed out on their Garden to Table session last week due to the Cluster Speech competition, so made up for it this week by making a yummy risotto. Thanks to our parent/grandparent helpers!

In the last pānui (newsletter), I shared an overview of your responses from our Whānau Showcase evening, where we asked you: “What qualities, dispositions, skills, and knowledge do you think our tamariki need to thrive?” I asked whether or not these align with your views through the short survey on Hero, thank you to those who responded. Here were your responses:

12 thought they strongly matched your views
5 thought they mostly matched your views
2 thought they somewhat matched your views
thought they didn’t match your views.

I’d like to continue this theme of collecting your views quickly through the short survey, so here is this week’s pātai (question) for you: Among the Qualities that you listed, which ONE do you believe is the MOST crucial for our tamariki to have?

Hui Ā Kura:

This afternoon we had our second Hui Ā Kura (Assembly) of Term 3 led by Finn, Henry and Chris from Kauri. Today was a bit of a sad one as we farewelled Braxton who is joining his big sister Indi at Linton Camp School next week. A lot of his friends will be sad to see him go, but we wish him well with his move! As you can see above, we also had Jude from Harvey Norman come and present us with a prize pack that we won from NZ Music Month of a speaker, microphone, stand and headphones. Ka rawe! (Awesome) As always, we recognised those who model our school’s uara (values) consistently, through our fortnightly tiwhikete (certificates). Those people were:

  • Rimu: Aiden – Manaakitanga
  • Rātā: Thatcher – Whanaungatanga
  • Pōhutukawa: Scarlett – Mātauranga
  • Mataī: Luca – Mātauranga
  • Tōtara: Liam – Mātauranga
  • Kauri: Michael – Mātauranga
  • Tumuaki: Ben D – Manaakitanga
  • Kaitiaki: Meren, Esmay, Skyla and Aerlene (pictured below) for picking up rubbish and tidying up the gardens in their own time. Ka mau te wehi! (Great work)

Board of Trustees (BoT) Elections:

The nomination part of our elections closed on Wednesday and we have 7 candidates willing to stand, so this means there will be an election to choose 5 new members. Voting instructions will differ for online or paper voters depending on whether we have a registered email for you. Online voters will receive a personalized email with a unique voting link and token from Election Pilot. Paper voters will receive a physical pack with a voting form and return envelope, with an option to vote online should they wish. All paper votes must be returned to the school office in the provided envelope. This timeline shows when everything is happening.

Out of School Sports:

Our Hockey teams wrapped up on Sunday morning and our Basketball players (pictured above) had their final game last night. Massive mihi (thank you) to the parents who volunteered to coach and manage the teams, we really couldn’t have done it without you.

From the PTA:

Howdy, partners! Hopefully, you’ve wrangled up your posse and are fixin’ to mosey on down to the school for our Wild West Quiz Night tomorrow! Don’t forget some loose change, a trusty fancy drinkin’ vessel and a mystery bottle of hooch. Before you saddle up, make sure you’ve got your designated wagon master all lined up. We want everyone to have a grand ol’ time and make it back to their homestead safe and sound. If you find yourself in a bind and can’t rustle up a ride home, don’t ya fret! Just have a word with one of our crew, and we’ll see what we can do to get you back to your lodging. We’ll see ya there, y’all hear?

From the Community:

  • Massey Kids Club offers before and after school care for kids until 5:30pm. They provide a nurturing environment with activities, outdoor play, meals, and pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Ross Intermediate open night is next Wednesday 13th August. Tours run from 5pm – 6:30pm and 7pm – 8:30pm.

Next week is Te Wiki o te Pangarau (Maths Week) and here at Turitea, we always embrace that with lots of in-class activities, whole-school activities and we even try to get you involved at home too, so keep an eye on Hero, as we’d love your input and involvement.

Noho ora mai (Farewell and stay well)
