End of Term 2 Week 7 Pānui

Tēnā koutou katoa, (Hello everyone)

I know the weather isn’t ideal, but we still look forward to seeing you tonight at our Matariki celebration. All the information for this is below and you would have received a Hero post on Wednesday about it too. Our Kapa Haka performance will kick off just after 5pm in Tāne Mahuta (Hall). Please can you have your tamariki here just before then, so they can get organised. (If they competed in Cluster Country today and their uniform is dirty, just sent them in black please). You’ll get to see all of the amazing mahi toi (artwork) our tamariki have created which is adorning our walls. A few classrooms will be open with kemu (games) for everyone to play together. The Real Deal Frybread and Hāngi food truck will be serving all pre-ordered kai right after the performance. And if hāngi isn’t quite what you’re after, you’re welcome to bring your own kai to eat with us all. Manawatia a Matariki (Lets honour, acknowledge and welcome in Matariki)

On Wednesday, a team of 20 tuakana (seniors) competed in the Year 5/6 Interschool Cross Country Event at the Ashhurst Domain. Ka rawe koutou (Awesome job) to Amelia, Ayla, Blake, Elisa, Finn, Grace, Harriet, Henry, Jackson, Joe, Kyerin, Mackenzie, Makayla, Mikhail, Rory, Ruby, Sophie and Xavier for running this challenging course. Whakamihi ki a koutou (Congratulations) to Rory who came 3rd and Kyerin who came 6th in the Year 5 Boys event.

This morning, a team of just over 50 tamariki braved the rain and muddy conditions at Stewarts Farm in Tokomaru for the Cluster Cross Country. Despite a whole week of less-than-ideal running weather, our team did really well on the increasingly boggy track, achieving many great results. Look how happy our teina (juniors) were just before they ran above! We will share the confirmed results with you all when we get them back for the fabulous organisers from Tokomaru School. Thanks to our teachers, parents and whānau who assisted with transport to/from the above events.

As you can see above, on Tuesday, we had the pleasure of hosting more than 20 teachers from Hiwinui, Newbury, Linton Camp, Tokomaru, and Aokautere schools. This was one of four Maths Professional Learning Days together and featured Maree from The Learner First as our facilitator. For part of the day, she spent 15-20 minutes in Tōtara, Mataī and Rātā classrooms, demonstrating different strategies and approaches for our visitors. Despite being in what might have felt like a “fishbowl” with so many eyes on them, our tamariki impressed everyone with their sound mathematical thinking.

As I mentioned in the last pānui, the team of scaffolders and roofers are on site today prepping for our roofing project that will take the next 6 weeks. Hopefully we can keep interruptions to a minimum, but it will mean there might be a few less parks at pick up this afternoon, so we appreciate your understanding with this.

On Monday, Pippa came to share with me her recent success at her first ever gymnastics competition in Kāpiti last weekend. She was very proud to have placed second on beam, third on floor and fourth overall as you can see above. Kei reira! (Right on!)

Whānau Showcase Evening:

Please mark Thursday 24th July (Term 3, Week 2) on your calendars as we’re hosting a brand new event that we are calling Whānau Showcase. It will run from 3.30 – 7pm and you can come at times that suit you over the course evening to give your tamariki an opportunity to shine and proudly share their learning and mahi (work) from the year with you. This evening will take the place of our usual Term 3 Kōrero Mai. If you’d still like a one-on-one chat with your child’s teacher after receiving their mid-year report at the end of this term, you’re welcome to schedule an appointment. However, the main goal of our Whānau Showcase is to let your child be the star and “show off” their achievements.

Loose Parts Play:

Hopefully you’ve seen the bright blue container beside the court. One of its main jobs is to store all kinds of things to spark the imagination of our tamariki, encourage collaborative play and get them designing and building. This concept is called “Loose Parts Play” and if you’re curious to learn more and get some ideas, check out this short article. The PTA is already buying some great items to kickstart our collection, but we were also wondering if any whānau have things they’re looking to re-home. We’re on the lookout for items on this list if you can help with anything, please let us know or bring them in.

Manawatū Table Tennis Championships:

Last weekend at the Manawatū Table Tennis Championships, our tamariki did outstanding. Ka pai tō mahi (Great job) to Xavier and Kazuri, who took home U11 Doubles Winners. Xavier and Blake battled it out in an epic five-set final to emerge as Novice Doubles Winners. They all had individual success by making it to either the semi or quarter-finals in their singles matches too.

From the PTA:

Y’all can get ready to wrangle up your posse for our Wild West Quiz Night on Saturday 9th August. We’re having it in little ole Tāne Mahuta from 7pm for a ‘rootin’ tootin’ good time. Dust off your cowboy boots, sharpen your wits and prepare for an epic showdown. To help us rustle up enough grub and provisions, we’d appreciate it if y’all could register your team by 18th July here. Don’t fret if your wagon isn’t full; if you’re looking to join a team, just send us an email and we’ll see if we can help you find some scalliwags to join.
