End of Term 1 Week 9 Pānui

Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou (A warm greeting to you all),

The pānui is a day early as we have made it to Easter! It’s a bit different this year as with Easter falling early we will come back for another two weeks next Wednesday 3rd April. Yes, Tuesday is a holiday, normally it doesn’t affect us as it falls during the holidays, but this is a throwback to when we had a three term year. A big thank you to the PTA. for starting our Easter celebrations, hosting the Family Easter Event last Saturday. The weather was kind and the photos show how much fun everyone had, it was great to see lots of new families.

Week 9 has been an unusually quiet week for us with only the Y3-6 boys having a cricket session on Monday. Miles returns next Friday to continue our basketball session which the children all enjoy. This would be a good reminder to check the community page for sports registrations. Thanks again to Meryl who has been working hard with the gardening group and classes.

This week Mataī helped her pick apples and bake apple crumble – it certainly passed the staff taste test! Lots of measuring, writing and art came out of this. Next week it will be Kahikatea and Tōtara’s turn to bake both savoury and sweet muffins making use of our bountiful gardens.

The smell of Hot Cross Buns filled the foyer on Monday. Thank you to the PTA for organising this and to the parents who supported them.

Troy is having a great time at the Tumuaki (Principals) conference at Waitangi. I know a highlight he was looking forward to was being welcomed onto the Marae, no doubt we will hear more about his week when he returns.

Hui ā Kura (Assembly):

This afternoon we had our third fortnightly Hui ā Kura (assembly) for the year and Cassius and Ezekiel from Tōtara were our Year 6 hosts. We expect each of our Year 6’s to show hautūtanga (leadership) within our school and one of the many ways they do this is to lead our assembly. They also showcase our school uara (values) and lead by example. Those demonstrating our uara consistently and getting their tiwhikete (certificate) are:

Rimu: Makenna – Whanaungatanga and Philip – Mātauranga
Rātā: Esme – Mātauranga
Pōhutukawa: Luca –  Kaitiakitanga
Mataī: Baxter – Mātauranga
Tōtara: Finn – Whanaungatanga
Kahikatea: Harry – Mātauranga
Tumuaki: Leo S – Manaakitanga

PTA Easter Raffle and Colouring in Competition:

Thank you to Claire and Aaron from Aokautere New World and PTA. parents for donating the lovely Easter Baskets. Congratulations to Hazel Chua winning first prize in the PTA Colouring in Competition. As you can tell from below, the standard was very high this year, we loved all the detail in Hazel’s entry. Congratulations to our raffle ticket winners; PTA Easter Basket: Antonia Crisford and the New World Aokautere Easter Basket: Elisa Stevenson-Saavedra.

Kōrero Mai – Learner Conferences:

Thank you to those of you who have already booked these in on either Wednesday 3rd April or Wednesday 10th April. You do this through Hero by clicking the home button in the bottom left corner, then going to School Bookings. If the times don’t suit, please connect with your child’s teacher at any time to arrange another appointment. I know some teachers and parents have already started this. Kōrero mai is a time to meet with the teacher (and your child if you wish) and hear how their first term has gone and set some goals moving ahead.

Firewood:

You might have seen the pile of firewood outside the school last Monday that we are looking to sell as a school fundraiser for $120 per cubic metre. You can arrange with us if you would like some help filling your own trailer one afternoon or we can offer a delivery option for up to 5 cubes for a small fee. Fill out the form if you would like to order some. We have also had a bunch more logs that we need to ring and split for the second round of this. If you are interested in helping us out one weekend soon, please let us know. Many hands, make light work!

What’s on in Palmy:

  • There is a Girls Get Golfing event on Wednesday 3rd April from 4pm – 5.30pm at Orlando Country Club. This is for girls aged 5 to 18, where you will have an introduction to Golf. No experience necessary and equipment will be available to use. For more information or to register please contact Janette Smith.
  • Netball Manawatū have a Holiday Programme on offer. The sessions will have lots of NetballSmart activities, developing skills, umpiring and gameplay. This programme is for anyone aged 5- 14 years.  Registration details and information can be found here.
  • True Hoops have their April Basketball Camps running at the CET Arena in the upcoming holidays: Register for the 2-Day Camp on Monday 15th & Tuesday 16th April from 9am-3pm. $60 per day or $100 for both days. Register for the Littles Camp on Wednesday 17th April from 9am-1pm for $45.

  • Are you going overseas for the school holidays? When you return, you can now complete a digital New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) before you fly back into New Zealand, replacing the need to fill out a paper declaration card on the plane. Everyone coming into New Zealand needs to complete an NZTD. You can complete it at a time that suits you on the NZTD website or by downloading the NZTD app and submitting it 24 hours before your trip back to New Zealand.

Trish and I have survived the week and haven’t created any chaos.  We will see you back at kura on Wednesday 3rd April (No School on Tuesday 2nd April) after Te Aranga (Easter). If you are travelling away, be safe and see you back then.

Kia pai tō rā whakatā (Have a great weekend)
