End of Week 7 Term 4 Pānui

Ka nui te mihi mahana kia koutou (Warm greetings to you all)

This week marked the last day for Lucy, who has been a student teacher with Cameron and the team in Tōtara. Her teaching programme at Waikato University gives her one day a week in school placement for the whole year. We will all miss her as she has felt like part of our team and it’s been great to witness her growth in the role of a teacher since February. This week we welcomed Caleb to Turitea School. He is Matthew’s younger brother and is our last 5 year old to start for 2023 in Rimu with Meagan and Hannah. Caleb has slotted in beautifully as for a long time, he has been riding to school with Susan, dropping off or picking up his brother. That puts us at 166 students, which will be our closing roll for the year. Thanks heaps to the Finnigan Family for choosing our school as part of the AFFCO Bobby Calves support for schools programme, we appreciate you doing this for us.

Class Placement for Next Year:

Thank you to those who got their thoughts on class placement in on time. I have had a few late emails and we will try to do our best to accommodate these, but we can’t make any promises as we do the best we can. I am not in a position to finalise these just yet as we have had three new whānau enrol in the last week, so changes are happening a lot at the moment. We appreciate your understanding.

Interschool Athletics:

Next Friday we send our team of Year 5/6 athletes to the Interschool Athletics competition where they will compete against many other schools in the Palmerston North region. All the best to Grace, Ruby, Juliette, Hannah, Maikara, Iti, Manawa, Nate, Callum, Ada, Natalie, Charlotte, Harper, Sophia, Billy, Cassius, Tahu, Elias and Ryleigh. We know you will represent us with pride and mana.

Life Ed:

Tim and Harold are very excited to be coming to Turitea School next Tuesday – Friday. You can tell from the picture above. They are very excited knowing that for some students, it is their first time in the Life Ed mobile classroom. They will be learning about such things as showing resilience, the qualities of friendship, managing our big feelings, how our body systems help our amazing brain and the importance of good nutrition. Life Ed is a charitable trust that has been working in NZ Schools for over 35 years. It aims to inspire learners and their families to make positive decisions about their wellbeing and receives no government funding. If you would like to support their worthy cause, they have the following items above for sale:

Harold flag pens – $1
Harold lanyards – $3
Soft toy keyring Harolds – $7
Harold drink bottles – $10
Harold notebooks – $15
Large Harold soft toys – $24

Camp Parent Meeting:

We had a great turn out to this parent information evening for those who have Year 4/5 students as they will be heading off to Highland Home Camp next year from March 5th – 8th 2024. If you would like to be a parent helper and missed the form they gave out, you can download it here. We need these back in by Monday 11th December please so we can do the ballot and vetting process on this side of the year.

From the Community:

-Palmy Brick Show: Make sure you head down to the Fly Palmy Arena this weekend for this ‘bricktastic’ annual event. We have a couple of keen Turitea parents who are part of the organising committee, so make sure you show your support. It is on both days this weekend with more information found here.

-Palmy Christmas Parade: Does your child want to take part in the Christmas Parade on Sunday 3rd December from 2-3pm? They have a category for decorated bikes. So get you and your bike all looking like Christmas and you could win a prize. All entrants get to take part in the parade. Enter here or find more information here.

-Parking Warning from PNCC: Over the past year more and more people are parking dangerously around our city, especially in residential areas and around schools. Between July 2022 and July 2023, 228 tickets were issued to people parking over cycle lanes and footpaths. From now until New Year’s Eve, warnings with educational material will be given to anyone who parks over footpaths and on cycle lanes to remind people of the parking rules and to make our roads and footpaths safer for all road users.

-Literacy Tuition: Is your child struggling with reading or writing? I can help. My name is Amelia and I am offering evidence-based literacy tuition in Manawatū for 2024. I am an experienced teacher with postgraduate qualifications in literacy education, as well as MSL (multisensory language) training. Following a comprehensive assessment, I will design a literacy intervention tailored to your child’s unique needs.  Multisensory interventions are ideal for those with dyslexia, as well as those who are struggling to develop literacy skills for other reasons.  Please contact me on 0212532711 or ameliamurrayliteracy@gmail.com
