Kia ora e te whānau,
Brrr, haven’t we had some chilly starts in the morning this week? Our tamariki have been fascinated with the sheets of ice they have found around the school, as you may have seen here. It even prompted our teina (juniors) to go out and ‘grow ice’ as they told me around the kura by planting pots of water at the end of the day in the hope that it would freeze overnight. Some great examples of real life inquiry and curiosity happening as teachers always love a ‘teachable moment.’
We are still riding high from our success on Tuesday at the Manawatū Battle of the Books as you may have seen here. A heartfelt congratulations to our Year 5/6 team of Marissa, Evander, Quinn, and Oliver who defended our title as you may recall we won this event last year! Big thanks to Will and Ali who came to support and provide transport and also to the Manawatū Literacy Association for organising.
Thank you to those who made time to meet with your child’s kaiako (teacher) during our Kōrero Mai (Learning Conferences) this week. Please remember if those times didn’t suit, please email them to arrange a time that works for you. We had an 83% turnout, which shows that partnerships are really strong here at Turitea. We appreciate those people who indicated whether our recent round of reporting hit the mark for you through the short survey. We had 53 responses saying they did, so that tells us most people got what they needed from these.
On Wednesday night, we had our first Board of Trustees hui (meeting) of the term and we wanted to share our school wide data with you, which you would have seen on a separate Hero post. Most of our students are currently sitting firmly in the consolidating phase, putting them on track to achieve or exceed their end of year targets. 73% of our ākonga (students) are meeting or exceeding expectations in Reading, 66% are meeting or exceeding expectations in Writing and 70% are meeting or exceeding in Maths. Ka rawe! (Awesome)
Hui Ā Kura:
This afternoon’s assembly was led by our tuakana (seniors) Emelie, Makayla, Michael and Jackson (See what I did there). Mihi atu (thank you) to those who came along to watch. It was a highlight to hear from Mataī and Pōhutukawa as they presented their recent mahi toi (artwork). We also took the time to whakanui (celebrate) our students who are always demonstrating our uara (values). A massive congratulations to every student who received a tiwhikete (certificate) today.

Ngā Whakanui Ākonga (Student Celebrations):
Our very own Daniel is very well-known as being the next ‘Bobby Fischer’ when it comes to chess. Last Sunday, he competed in the monthly Sarapu Cup chess tournament. He put on a brilliant performance in the Bishop division, finishing 2nd overall and 1st in the Under-10 category. Ka pai Daniel.
Shout out to Abby and Skyla for being the new poster girls for Hockey Manawatū. You might have seen the gorgeous photo of them above advertising the new Hockey season.
Out-of-Zone Ballot:
Last week, I shared about our Out-of-Zone Ballot for new families to join our hāpori (community) next term and beyond. We have spaces in Year 0, Year 2, Year 4, and Year 5. Your recommendations are the best form of advertising whānau so if you know of anyone who would be a great fit for our school, tell them to contact us, visit our website for application details before next Thursday 6th August.
