Ahiahi mārie ki a koutou (Good afternoon everyone),
Lots of winter bugs are going around at the moment and I would know as I am writing this pānui from bed today. This morning we had our Year 5/6 School Speech Competition in which we had Evander, Zali, Lily, Leo, Kyerin, Baxter and Ayla try to persuade us with an issue they felt passionate about. We also had our Year 4’s poetry recital where Lachie, Skyla, James, Meren and Bronwyn shared their favourite poems by heart. It was a great opportunity to have our very own Karen come back to Turitea to judge for us, alongside her friend Debbie. After much deliberation, it was decided that Kyerin was our winner, with Leo being our runner-up and Evander being our reserve. Bronwyn won the poetry recital and James was our runner up. Kei reira koutou (Awesome everyone!)
On Tuesday, Trish and Cameron took their ākonga (learners) from Pōhutukawa and Mataī to the Kind Hearts Conference at the Awapuni Racecourse. They were one of the 25 schools that were involved in this movement and heard from Shaz Dagg, a Feilding-based paratriathlete, Amy Hunt, a musical extraordinaire and Alan Dingley, a children’s book expert. The Kind Hearts in Schools programme links nicely to our school uara (value) of manaakitanga and we love spreading kindness.
We are getting ready for our Marae trips next week, with tamariki from Tōtara, Mataī and Rātā going on Tuesday and those in Kauri, Pōhutukawa and Rimu going on Wednesday. Please open the information on the Hero Events tab and give permission for your child to attend. We need you to do this as we are leaving the confines of Palmerston North. We would pretty please love some more parent helpers too…
Next week is Maths Week, so Carly and Hannah have organised some fun home and school activities to encourage whānau participation. Each afternoon, we will be posting on Hero and Facebook a different problem to get as many people involved in maths as we can. They will be multi-levelled with ‘Kākano’ designed for our Juniors and ‘Rākau’ suited for our Seniors. Have a go, show your working, write your name on it and send it into school the next day. They have even arranged a prize box, so get your maths brains engaged!

- Hope to see you at the PTA Disco tonight at 5pm – 7pm in Tāne Mahuta. Come dressed in your favourite colour. Sausages, Drinks and Glow Sticks for sale so bring some coins to purchase.
- In Week 7, we are organising a Whittakers Chocolate fundraiser, which proceeds will go towards the swings in our playground. More information to come out about this in the coming weeks.
- Have you got Saturday 19th September circled on your calendar? We look forward to having another Quiz Night as they are always a bit of a laugh.
