Tēnā koutou katoa, (Hello Everyone)
It was great to Wear It For The Wahs to show our support for the NZ Warriors ahead of their clash with the Dolphins tomorrow. Sorry for being a bit late on that movement as I only saw it last night. I grew up in Auckland and my Dad was a huge Warriors supporter, so they are a special team to me. Here’s hoping they can do it for him this year!
A highlight of this week has been our DanceNZmade stars shining on stage on Tuesday evening at the Palmerston North Regional Competition. Hopefully you took a few minutes to watch their performance that we shared on Hero on Wednesday. We were so very proud of them!
This week, we welcomed two new ākonga (students) to Rimu. Both of them are very familiar with Turitea School as they are younger siblings of current students. Nau mai haere mai (Welcome) to Bryn, who is Thomas’ little brother and Iris, who is River’s little sister. It is so great to see you finally at school with us.
Next week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) and ‘Don’t be shy, give Te Reo a try!’ As you are all well aware, kaupapa Māori (Māori topics) are something we pride ourselves on providing at Turitea School, so we are looking to level up what we already do next week. This year’s theme is Te Reo Towns and is all about celebrating the communities, histories and meaning behind our town names.
Long before Palmerston North got its name, Rangitāne (our local tribe) ancestors stumbled across a sunlit clearing in the middle of native forest and said ‘Te Papa-i-Oea!’ which translates to ‘How beautiful it is!’ So when European surveyors saw this spot, they agreed it was the perfect place to build a town. They briefly used the transliteration Pamutana, but Te Papaioea remains the Māori name celebrating land we call home.
This week, many ex-Turitea students are up in Tauranga for the annual AIMS games tournament. It has been awesome to hear their achievements at this nationwide sports showcase. Natalie won gold in the Mountain Bike X-Country event. Henry and Blake won bronze in Table Tennis. Ka rawe koutou! (Awesome!)

Lamb, Calf & Pet Day:
Another reminder about our annual LCP Day, which is on Friday 23 October from 4pm. Our tamariki are encouraged to raise a lamb/calf or bring a pet they care for to this event. Submit entries via the form. Whānau are invited to join us to explore classroom exhibits and enjoy the courtyard food trucks. We need more animals, so consider raising one or bringing one along, it adds to the element of this Turitea tradition.
Sports for Term 4:
Please check Hero for information about the sports on offer with Soccer, Hockey, Touch Rugby and Netball available. Also next term, Kelly Sport are offering their onsite afterschool sports clinics on a Thursday for those in Year 0-3. If they get ten tamariki booked into the programme, they’ll randomly draw one child who will receive either a full refund or a credit towards next year. You can sign up here. They will also be doing a taster session for all students in those year levels in the first week back next term.

- Ngā mihi (Thanks) to everyone who has jumped in to support our PTA Chocolate Fundraiser. We have been overwhelmed with support from our hāpori (community). We still have a few boxes remaining, but what an outstanding effort whānau. Our swings will be here next term!
- With regret we had to cancel the Decades Quiz Night, sorry to those who had already booked and were pumped for a great time. The amazing PTA team will arrange a full refund for you all.
