Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou (Warmest greetings to you all)
Excitement has been high at Turitea with this week being New Zealand Book Week. Each day there have been different lunchtime activities for our tamariki to get involved in, as well as our ‘Teacher Read Around the School’ which you may have seen here. This culminated with our prized Book Character Dress Up Day today which saw so much creativity and passion come in the many different costumes that surfaced. NZ Book Week sponsored $50 vouchers from Bruce McKenzie Books to give to our best dressed. Our Year 1/2 winner was Marco as Neenaw the Fire Engine, the Year 3/4 winner was Meren the Mandalorian and the Year 5/6 winners were Joe and Jackson AKA Stanley and Zero from Holes. As you can see below, Azriel and I were matching BFG’s. Ka rawe koutou (Awesome everyone)

Today, Tāne Mahuta played host to the Fitzherbert Cluster Speech Competition, hearing well-crafted speeches from Year 5-8 ākonga (students) from Aokautere, Linton Camp, Ōpiki and Tokomaru schools. The quality of the speakers was very high and we were incredibly proud of Kyerin and Leo who represented Turitea with the delivery and execution of their speech. Whakamihi nui ki a koutou (Congratulations) to Kyerin who won the Year 5/6, Max From Aokautere who came second and Isla from Ōpiki who came third. Bernice from Linton Camp won the Year 7/8 competition with Ryzel from Ōpiki coming second and Stasia from Linton Camp in third place.
On Monday we welcomed Ananda to our kura as he joined the ākonga (learners) in Rimu alongside Anna and Lynley. He is the first in his whānau to attend, so Nau mai haere mai (Welcome) Ananda.
Winter Bugs:
Winter illnesses are making the rounds again, staff and students! While we aim to meet the MoE attendance target of 80% of our students attending at least 90% of the time, well-being remains our top priority. Please keep your child home if they are showing any signs of illness. Rest is the best medicine and keeping sick tamariki at home helps this from spreading. The MoE offer their advice and guidance here.
Online GP:
Did you know Online GP Care is now free for tamariki aged 13 and under? If your child is unwell, and you can’t see your usual GP then Health New Zealand’s online service can help whānau access healthcare advice from home. It offers consultations by video or phone and is available 24/7 through participating providers. It is intended for non-urgent health concerns. Learn more and book on the Health NZ website.
Ngā Whakanui Ākonga (Student Celebrations):
Huge congratulations to Maya, whose artwork was selected as one of just four winning entries out of nearly 200 in the PNCC Library Colouring Competition! She won a Sustainability Pack prize for her efforts. If you know Maya, you’ll know her artwork is simply outstanding, so this won’t surprise you. We will share the post with you when they publish it.
Pick Up/Drop Off:
We still have a growing number of students who are still at school after 3.30pm unsupervised. A reminder about our information about this on our website at the bottom. Whānau are asked to collect children at 3pm or 3.15pm; any uncollected students must wait on the office porch when the music signals at 3.15pm on Wednesdays or 3.30pm on other days.
Looking Ahead to 2027:
It might seem too early to be doing this, but we are heading into the months where we have to consider projections for next year. If you have a younger child at home that turns five next year, please fill out our pre enrollment form so we know how many spaces we can offer in our ballot for 2027 spaces. Also if you know your whānau are relocating next year, please let us know as soon as possible.
From the PTA:
- Well done whānau, we have five teams already signed up for our Decades Quiz Night on Saturday 19th September at 6.30pm. Assemble a team of up to 8 for $100 and join us for a fun night. Sign your team up here. If anyone would like to sponsor prizes or donate auction, please reach out to Jo at pta@turitea.school.nz
- Our next fundraiser starts in Week 7 and we are asking each whānau to sell one box of Whittakers Chocolate (36 bars) at $3 per bar, totaling $108 per box. For every box sold, we raise just over $40 which proceeds will go towards the swings in our playground. Each fundraising pack contains 12 bars each of Creamy Milk and 6 each of Coconut, Hokey Pokey, Peanut and Almond Gold.
